About the Event

Wilderness environments create special situations not usually encountered in an urban or suburban environment.  With ASHI Wilderness First Aid training, first aid providers in a wilderness setting will be better prepared to respond when faced with limited resources, longer times to care for someone, and decisions about when and how fast to evacuate an ill or injured person. This 16-hour course covers wilderness and remote first aid from a basic understanding of emergency response in an outdoor setting to specific techniques and considerations for a wide range of injuries and illnesses.

ASHI is a nationally accredited organization of the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education and its CPR, AED and first aid training programs are equivalent to the programs offered by both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross (ARC). It conforms to the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for First Aid and also meets or exceeds the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, 2017 Edition. Upon successful completion participants are issued a certification card good for 2 years.  CPR is not included but is typically scheduled as a separate class the evening of the first day for those wishing to add it by selecting the CPR Add-on option during check out. Tuition includes online access to the student book; a hard copy is available for an additional cost. Previous completion of Basic First Aid recommended but not required. Age 12+.

Highlights:

  • 2 days of classroom and hands-on wilderness first aid training that is comprehensive, professional and fun
  • Exposure to a wide range of techniques and skills
  • Multiple opportunities to perform patient assessment and provide care in simulated scenarios
  • A supportive learning environment

This course will be taught by Randy Manuel of the NOLI. Randy is a Wilderness EMT, Lead Instructor, and Instructor Trainer for SOLO Schools and an ACA level IV Swiftwater Rescue Instructor. He is the Training Officer and a Field Team Leader with Cherokee County Search and Rescue {NC}. Randy fills other roles within EMS as well, but his main focus is teaching. He has been an instructor for over a decade, teaching hundreds of Wilderness Medicine and Survival Courses. Attend just one of his classes and you'll see he is knowledgeable, passionate about the topics, and his enthusiasm is contagious. "It's extraordinary to me, the realization of knowing that I'm passing the torch to the next generation of outdoor leaders. I'm honored and humbled to have the privilege to do so." When not at work you might find Randy, his wife Jae, and their dog Jefe hiking, boating, or simply near a body of water on this big, beautiful, blue marble we call home.
